Objective / brief for writer

Why is Puglia the organic cookery capital of Italy?

Body text: Visit Puglia – the sparkling jewel in Italy’s boot

Puglia, the sound rolls off the tongue like a fine Italian wine. Yet where is this often forgotten part of Italy that has so much to offer both the holiday maker and the food lover?

Located in south-eastern Italy, Puglia is a tourist’s treasure trove.

Take your pick from the regional capital Bari or experience one of its many whitewashed hilltop or coastal towns, like Ostuni or Alberobello, being sure to explore the side streets. Sun lovers will be attracted to long sandy beaches. Cycling, trekking and hiking in Puglia’s splendid countryside are all available if you are feeling more adventurous.

The term organic is used frequently these days but this region, with its fertile pastures, really can claim to be the organic cookery capital of Italy. Choose from locally grown olive oil, vegetables, wine and durum wheat which is turned into orecchiette or “little ears” pasta after their shape.

Peasant cooking is what still goes in this region and this comes through in the flavours of the food you will experience. Fish lovers can decide on locally caught red mullet, anchovies, mussels or sea bass. If meat is more to your taste then Puglia’s rocky terrain is perfect for sheep farming which means tasty regional lamb dishes.

Another must see for the tourist is the iconic sight of a trullo which translates as conical. These dwellings or trulli with their conical limestone tiled rooves are hard to miss in Alberobello and can be seen elsewhere throughout the southern Murgia region of the peninsula.

Puglia is still relatively unknown as a major tourist destination outside of Italy and with so much to explore and so many things to do, as well as its celebrated organic approach to food and cooking, be sure to visit the region before the rest of the world discovers this gem in Italy’s boot!
